2. The Bungalow (2) 7. The Hollies (19)

(1998 UK Top 50 position in brackets)

In the West Midlands, the three top names are identical to the national survey, but Yew Tree Cottage, The Hollies and The Croft are notable inclusions in the top 10.

Outside the top 10, other house names paint a romantic picture of England’s green and pleasant land. The arboreal theme includes Oak, Cedar, Beech, Hawthorn, Elm and Poplar.... with a penchant for evergreens as in The Firs, Holly Cottage, The Laurels, Conifers, Willows and Myrtle.

Fruity favourites are Apple, Pear, Cherry and Plum. Popular sweet-smelling Cottages include Clematis, Jasmine, Lilac, Honeysuckle and Primrose.

It could be argued that the region has its fair share of undesirables, with names such as Beggar’s Roost, Fiddler’s Cottage, Poacher’s Pocket, Tinker’s Cottage, Pedlar’s Cottage and The Hideaway.
